One in four associations fail to track carbon footprint, ICCA and Destination Canada report finds

24% of international associations do not calculate their carbon footprint, according to a report released by the International Congress and Convention Association and Destination Canada.

The State of Sustainability in Associations Report found that 66% of international associations rate sustainability as very or extremely important, an increase from 60% in 2023. However, 19% of associations outsource carbon footprint measurement rather than developing internal capabilities.

The report identified cost as a barrier to sustainable event planning, with 63% of associations citing it as the top obstacle. Yet 46% of associations indicated willingness to pay 5% to 24% more for sustainable options.

“Our industry has moved beyond debating whether sustainability matters,” Senthil Gopinath, chief executive of ICCA, said. “The challenge now is transforming aspiration into accountability. This report provides the insight and evidence our community needs to act with purpose and precision.”

Virginie De Visscher, executive director of business events at Destination Canada, said the organizations aim to build a more sustainable business events industry.

“We’re proud to partner with ICCA on this report, and we hope it empowers associations and destinations alike to turn their sustainability goals into lasting impact,” Virginie De Visscher said.

Hamburg Messe & DN Media Group sign MoU with Singapore for wind energy events

Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH, DN Media Group AS and Singapore government agencies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to organize wind energy conferences and exhibitions in Singapore from 2026 to 2029.

The agreement was signed during the RECHARGE Wind Power Summit 2025 in Hamburg. Enterprise Singapore and Singapore Tourism Board will support the organizers in hosting two event series: a 2-day RECHARGE Wind Power Summit Asia-Pacific in 2026 and a 3-day WindEnergy Asia-Pacific in 2027 and 2029.

The partnership aims to address wind energy development in Asia-Pacific, where countries including Australia, India, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and Vietnam have announced wind energy targets and conducted feasibility studies and auctions.

“Singapore is committed to leading Asia-Pacific’s offshore wind development, which is crucial to the region’s clean energy transition,” Leng Wan Soh, assistant managing director for manufacturing at Enterprise Singapore, said. “We have been propelling growth of the industry through innovation, standards development, and supply chain enhancements.”

Chi Chuan Poh, executive director of exhibitions and conferences at Singapore Tourism Board, said hosting the wind energy exhibition “positions Singapore as a leading sustainable urban destination.”

“RECHARGE is proud to help power the energy transition in Asia Pacific by connecting global expertise with regional opportunity,” Baard Haugen, chief executive of DN Media Group, said.

Heiko M. Stutzinger, chief executive of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH, said the events will offer opportunities for collaboration and business development. Hamburg Messe und Congress will market the conference and exhibition to its network.

The events will feature conferences, trade fairs, roundtables, networking sessions and site visits to offshore wind supply chain companies in Singapore.

IFES inks partnership with AKEI to boost exhibition cooperation in the APAC region

The International Federation of Exhibition and Event Services (IFES) has signed an MoU with the Association of Korean Exhibition Industry (AKEI) to advance the exhibition sector and strengthen collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region.

The partnership will focus on promoting practices, raising standards and connecting exhibition professionals in Korea with the IFES network. IFES operates in 47 countries with more than 320 member companies.

“This partnership with AKEI reflects our belief that for our industry to thrive globally, we need to champion regional growth, exchange knowledge freely and open new pathways for collaboration,” Jörg Zeißig, president of IFES, said. “We see this as an exciting opportunity to connect Korean enterprises with our international members, unlocking new markets, partnerships and more resilient ways of working.”

Soo-Deuk Sohn, president of AKEI, said Korea’s exhibition industry drives exports, supports related sectors and generates employment.

“Through this partnership, we aim to strengthen the industry’s infrastructure, create new business opportunities for SMEs and enhance Korea’s standing in the global exhibition community,” Soo-Deuk Sohn said.

AKEI has secured recognition for the exhibition industry through the Exhibition Industry Development Act and launched certification programs. The organization has advanced digital transformation and international expansion initiatives.

Under the agreement, IFES and AKEI will collaborate on professional development, share market intelligence and connect Korean service providers and organizers with international opportunities. IFES members will gain access to AKEI’s market insight and expertise in Korea’s exhibition sector.

The organizations will explore hybrid models, sustainable supply chains and joint educational initiatives. Both organizations prioritize sustainability, innovation and professional standards.
